The annual Sockeye salmon run in the Kenai River is peaking. Huge schools are swimming upstream to their spawning tributaries. Sooooo …… Grant and I decided to make a 3 hr. scenic trek south in hopes of transporting some Sockeyes from the river to our freezer.
Dipnetting is a favorite method of harvesting salmon in the Last Frontier. Alaskans in chest waders, with 5ft. wide net dipnets, wade out into icy rivers to scoop up Sockeyes swimming by. On a good run an individual can net their 25 salmon limit in a couple hours and be able to dine on Omega 3 rich filets throughout the year.
Grant and I chose a more sporting rod and reel method to harvest Sockeyes known as Flip and Floss. Standing in chest-deep water you flip a decorated bare hook on a long length of line with a small weight attached out into the swift current, hoping a passing Sockeye will be hooked in the mouth as it ‘flosses’ the line. Sounds a tad weird, but with thousands of salmon swimming by, there’s always some that apparently are flossing addicts 😊
With Sockeye filets priced at $15/lb. – $30 lb. and the average Sockeye salmon yielding 2+ pounds of nutritious filets, this can prove to be lucrative fishing fun 😊 Do the math …
25 Sockeyes X 2 lb. filets X = 50 lbs.
50 lbs. filets X $20/lb. = $1,000 in the freezer!
OK! … OK!, I didn’t subtract for overhead expenses:
$50 for petrol at $4.50/gallon here
$50 for 2 hours of ‘laborious’ fishing @ 25/hr.
Bottom line, a ‘net’ $900 Omega 3 profit! … I’m gonna’ keep on fishing, even if gas reaches $10/gal. 😊
“This is the day the Lord hath made; We will rejoice and be glad in it”
Psalm 118:24
Here’s a few pics of Grant and I ‘laboring’ in the Kenai River for Sockeyes, bathed in glorious Alaskan sunshine 😊 I M Blessed … May U B 2
