Joy And Sorrow

Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes in the morning.”

Psalms 30:5

The two recent tragic airline disasters in Philadelphia and DC accentuated the unknown brevity of this life we’ve all been given. The Philadelphia crash was especially poignant to  me. It occurred less than 2 miles from the home where I grew up as a child.

“All the people are grass. Their constancy is like the flower of the field.

The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it.

Surely the people are grass, but the Word of God will stand forever.”

Isaiah 40:7-8

Praying through my despondency for comfort to those friends and relatives grieving their lost ones, I finally felt led to leave it in His hands and take my own oft promoted advice to  . . . Keep looking Up ^

Scrolling through some Science feeds, a uniquely interesting study popped up. Resorting to what my oldest daughter has dubbed my ‘coping mechanism’, I thought tweaking it with a bit of humor might help alleviate my gloom, and perhaps spread a smile across another’s face somewhere. Here’s what came together in the recesses of my ole cranium:

Penn State scientists attached miniature QR codes to the backs of 32,000 honeybees to study how far they travel from their hives in collecting pollen and nectar. The study revealed honeybees:

  • Can live up to 8 weeks vs the 4 weeks previously thought.
  • Most bees take short trips of 1-4 minutes outside the hive, but about 1/3 spend over 2 hours away from the hive.

Unfortunately, not everyone regarded this innovative honeybee QR code study as a ‘sweet’ idea, and things got ‘sticky’😊

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) joined forces with PETB (People for the Ethical Treatment of Bees) and ‘stung’ the Penn State scientists with a 5X5 D.I.P. lawsuit … (Detrimental Invasion of Privacy) … demanding the following settlement stipulations:

  1. All QR codes will immediately be removed from each of the 32.000 honeybees involved in the study. Any honeybees suffering demise from QR code removal will incur a Wrongful Death charge of 5 new hives
  2. The hives of each honeybee colony involved in this study will be replaced with 5 new hives retrofitted with new honey frames and extra winter insulation.
  3. All new hives will have access to 5 acres of clover within a 5-minute flight time radius of the hive.
  4. Over the next 5 years all proceeds from the honey harvested by the honeybee colonies from each of the new hives will be equally distributed between PETA and PETB.
  5. Scientists will unequivocally agree to ‘Buzz-Off‘ on any such future studies 😊

Thanks for enduring my weird humor 🥴. I’ll leave you with this upbeat poem a decidedly saner fellow blogger shared recently:

Smiling is infectious,
You catch it like the flu,
When someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too…

So, if you feel a smile begin,
Don’t leave it undetected,
Let’s start an epidemic quick,
And get the world infected.

Pray; count your blessings; pass along a smile😊; and remember to . . .

  2. Don’t have a clue how scientists decorated 32,000 need with QR codes Mamalava, but think there must ‘bee’ better ways for them to invest their time and $$$ 😄   Keep Looking Up . . . His Best is Yet to Come!

  3. How exactly does one go about affixing, or removing, a QR code from the back of a honeybee (or 32,000 of them!)? PETA and PETB seem to bee 🐝 a bit self serving since they are the recipients of the profits.
