The Cherokee National Forest borders our Great Smoky Mountains environs. Except for sections lying within the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, it comprises the border area between eastern Tennessee western North Carolina. A pristine retreat John Muir once described . . . “And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.”
Freely roaming this scenic Appalachian wilderness are approximately 200 Cervus canadensis, the second largest species of the deer family. The Shawnee and Cree Indians called the elk wapiti for their white rumps.
Here’s a few scenes of the small wapiti herd this ole Homo sapiens wapiti 😊observed on his afternoon’s wander, peacefully grazing a meadow together, bathed in bright winter sunshine.
