Not certain if it’s respect for my octogenarian status, or sympathy for my often ‘not-a-clue’ behavior and goofy smile, that’s attributable to the many times I’ve been the totally surprised and grateful recipient of the Pay-It-Forward generosity of others. Nevertheless, it always reminds me of the mutual joy found in the words Jesus spoke in Acts20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive”, and always brightens my day.
The Pay-It-Forward incident below occurred during the Christmas rush at a post office in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and reminded me of the contagious blessing of giving, be it $10 or 19 cents.
I was third in line in the post office at 11:45 am on a Saturday. The woman at the postal window appeared upset when the postal the clerk told her she needed $10 more to send her package. The Post Office closed at noon, and it was too late for her to go home to get the money.
The woman in front of me said, “I’ll cover it for you.”
The upset woman was so pleased she asked for her name and address to be able to repay the $10.
“No”, woman replied, “I’m glad to help.”
“Thank you so much.” the grateful woman responded as she left.
When the generous woman in front of me finished, I said, “Let me split it with you”, and handed her $5.
“Oh, thanks.” she said, and went on her way.
Next at the window I handed the postal clerk my already stamped letter to the Netherlands.
The clerk said, “You’ll need 19 cents more.’”
As I reached for my wallet, he said, “I saw what you did. I’ll cover the 19 cents.”
